SINGLE ENVY

I finally watched A Single Man last night. I’ve been meaning to catch it for ages because everyone says it’s such a beautiful, poignant story, but more to see Tom Ford’s sartorial vision translated onto the silver screen. I wasn’t disappointed – the perfect colour palettes left me wistful for a life filled with muted caramels, ivories and blush pinks. My beau went a bundle over George’s (aka Colin Firth) mid-century minimal wood and glass pad, but for me it was all about Charley’s (the ageless Julianne Moore) Hollywood Regency glitz. Beyond her orangery (oh for an orangery!) lay a sitting room dominated by a bone coloured crescent couch littered with gold and oyster pink lace cushions, her walls adorned with giant, pearl-embellished mirrors. Her bedroom was just as beyond fabulous with a miniature white fur armchair, glorious gold oversize dressing table lamps, a Moroccan-inspired mirror and coral and white ikat print curtains. The perfect blend of showy pieces in serene shades. This place was unashamedly feminine, and while I don’t dig chintzy girliness, the glamour of these furnishings seemed all-woman. Turns out, many of the pieces sourced were vintage (as opposed to reproductions from a prop warehouse) and the sets were dreamt up by the Mad Men production team, Dan Bishop and Amy Wells – which explains not only their attention to detail but the sheer elegance of every room. Oh so lovely.
